Texas Corn Producers Association held its virtual annual meeting at the end of January. The meeting featured special guests Rep. Angelia Orr (TX-13) who detailed the landscape of the Texas Legislative Session and Matt Schertz with Schertz Strategies who discussed the state of crop insurance in Texas and federal farm policy.

Jim Sugarek, who served as the association’s president from 2023-2024, provided an overview of the association’s advocacy efforts this past year. From economic disaster assistance to the farm bill, the state’s corn association was working to ensure the interests of the state’s corn farmers were considered. Sugarek recapped many of these efforts that came to a head in the fall of 2024 HERE.

Elections took place during the annual meeting as well. TCPA members voted to re-elect five board of directors seats whose terms expired. These directors were re-elected to a 3-year term:

  • Region 4 – Daniel Berglund
  • Region 5 – Colin Chopelas
  • At-Large – Joe Reed
  • At-Large – Wesley Spurlock
  • At-Large – Dee Vaughan

The board of directors also elected officers for 2025:

  • Hagen Hunt, President | Hale County
  • Chad Wetzel, Vice President | Grayson County
  • Colin Chopelas, Secretary/Treasurer | Nueces County

TCPA appreciates Sugarek’s work as the outgoing president who served the board for the two consecutive 1-year terms allowed for an officer position.

Sugarek noted there is work to be done and much the association is watching in the year ahead, including an updated farm bill, expiring tax provisions, trade, immigration, border security and what comes from the state’s legislative session.

It’s because of the support of the association’s members and farmer leaders that TCPA is able to make a difference. Learn more about supporting TCPA as a member HERE, and help us shape effective policy for corn farmers across the state.
